This is a great suggestion. Another (and sometimes cheaper) alternative is a Kindle Unlimited subscription. It takes a little more leg work, but you can sometimes borrow the book for free and then purchase the Audible companion for as low as like $1.99. I listen to only crappy spy/cop novels since they are generally easy to follow while driving, and there are tons of options.
Congrats on the new job.

Would your lunch posts go up or down in frequency?
People keep thinking Oppo is a srs bsns carblog and not a drunk car nerd slice of life circus, but it’s not, it’s really not. It’s a drunk car nerd slice of life circus with good srs bsns carblog posts on it.

Fuck Audible. Get Scribd. Monthly sub, but the books are free as long as you subscribe.

Is it better, or just cheaper? I bought my wife an Audible subscription years ago, before Scribd existed, and she still says it’s one of the best things I ever got her...

I’m not much for endorsing products, but I love Audible. I use my monthly credit to get unabridged 40+ hour long books. That’s more than enough to keep my ears busy going back and forth from Baton Rouge to Houston.

It’s different. With a Audible subscription you get discounts on books and a monthly credit you can use to buy books. When you stop subscribing you get to keep the books you bought, either with cash or credits. With Scribd all the books are free as long as you are a subscriber , think Spotify instead of iT unes.

Yeah, audiobooks are fantastic for trips. We’ve got a headphone splitter so we can both listen to a book (with one earbud in) while the kids are watching whatever movie they want in the back.

Oppo is so much more than that: my mechanic buddy that knows everything that I can call whenever, and somebody that has no choice but to listen to me whine.

When I went to quit a few months ago, I was so anxious I actually chickened out , and then my boss was out of office for the next couple days, which made my anxiety even worse.

If cheaper is the most important factor can’t really beat signing up for your local library’s online e-book an audiobook platform. I’m no book snob – mostly I just want something entertaining to read/listen to and there is always something that is able to keep me happy available for download immediately.
For books I specifically want to read there’s usually a wait list , so I have a bunch of those on back-order . A 21 day non-renewable length can be a pain if you’re a slow reader/are already reading something else when a book you really wanted gets loaned out to you, but other than that it’s an easy way to always have something to listen to for $free.99.
M y library uses the Overdrive platform, not sure if there are others. It’s been perfectly pleasant to use as an app, and borrowing e-books in kindle format is never an issue either.

My wife uses the library , too. They actually lend out little audio players with the books loaded on them.

As in that’s the only option for borrowing? It’s nice having the online platform so I never have to actually set foot in the library or worry about “returning” anything – when time is up it just gets deleted off my phone, and I can borrow (i.e. download) stuff straight off the app to listen to/read. Might be worth looking in to on your end too, seems like a pretty common tool many libraries seem to be adopting these days.

They’ve got CDs, these players, and they may have the online thing, too - not sure.

I have an hour plus of total commute time each day, so I really should get into audiobooks more, but at the moment I really just use them on longer road trips.

The app/online platform is super useful – definitely recommend checking it out. Works well on smartphone, and android auto as well. My commute is about 30 minutes so not too long, and in the evenings usually I just want to listen to some music to unwind – so I get through the books pretty slowly, but still manage to get through them during the 3 week loan period. I do podcasts in between books, but I don’t really have any favorites right now that keep me hooked. I heard there’s a new season of Serial, might give it a shot.

I generally just do radio or music in the car, but listen to lots of podcasts at work.

Lunch posts are the highlight of my workday! I guess if i wasn’t coding all day I could think of something more srs bsns carblog stuff to post about like how my kid has now dented two of my cars.
